Sometimes I think my mind isn't as open as I would like it to be, for my first day at Ridgewood started out with an expectation for it to be Mrs. Hart's class. But, I was incorrect, it was different in its own wonderful way. Instead of bright, neat, and clean, Mrs. Wheeler's room still consisted of welcoming tones, with the lights off, lava lamps scattered across the room, and music playing in the background. It wasn't your typical classroom, but it seemed to fit the students, providing a calming effect for the stressed children. It was also interesting because the teacher aides trusted me to walk around on my own, sitting with a struggling second grader by myself. Additionally, I liked how organized the unit was, the teacher aides were supposed to be in scheduled rooms at scheduled times, so all the students have added help in times of difficulties, such as transitions, or academic struggles. These students rely on constant instruction to help them get through the day, and this unit does everything they can to provide them with the opportunities. The majority of the students are autistic and have severe behavior issues. While I'm in this class, I'll be moving from grade to grade working with the students.
Today I worked with a little second grader who just moved from Las Vegas right before school started. The adjustment was hard, but it is obvious that she has made herself quite comfortable, as she was comfortable around all of the teachers and me. She was climbing up on my lap, and showing how adorable she is, but didn't seem to respond to well to the word, "no," as she curled up on the floor crying and refusing to work. I know she will be a challenge, but I am so excited to have the opportunity to work with these students!
